Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral with extreme flexibility and resistant to tension, heat, chemicals and electricity. The removal of asbestos is important because exposure during demolition or renovation activities of pre-1980’s structures holds considerable danger when asbestos containing materials (ACM) are inhaled or ingested which can result in disabling or fatal diseases. Asbestos was used in all types of building materials including drywall/joint compound, fireproofing, mirror mastic, transite, roof caulking, fire doors, linoleum, A/C pipe, popcorn ceiling, floor tile, putty/paint stucco, vinyl sheet flooring, pool plaster, pipe elbows, duct seam tape, siding, ceiling texture and thermal systems insulation (TSI). Because asbestos is still manufactured and utilized today all building materials should be suspected as asbestos containing until tested.
